Many people associate Athens with its major college landmark, Court Street. And lined along that brick-laden road and others Uptown are a plethora of bars ' 17, to be exact.
With so many choices for a weekend, which bar is the right one for you? Or better yet, which bar will provide you the greatest buzz for the fewest dollars? So many options often make it hard to decide where to go for a great evening out on a tight budget.
Luckily, we're in Athens, and most bars offer cheap drinks, unlike big cities. (I'm from Pittsburgh, where a Long Island iced tea often costs more than $7.50). But it's hard to narrow it down to which specials are the best bang for their buck. So sit back, relax and allow me to share my knowledge of bar specials in Athens.
First, we'll start with Tuesday, the I-can't-wait-two-more-days-before-I-go-out night. Pawpurrs Bar, 37 N. Court St., offers a 50-cent draft night. Pay $1 for a plastic cup at the door, and all the domestic drafts you can drink are only 50 cents the whole night. Where else can you get a decent buzz for under $2?
Hit up Courtside Pizza, 85 N. Court St., on Wednesdays for 50-cent slice night. Come between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. for 50-cent slices of Courtside's delectable pizza and then stay the evening for $1 shots. Even with tip you can have a delicious dinner and great evening out for under $10.
Next on the list is the ever-famous Thursday. Thursday kicks off the official party weekend, with most establishments offering awesome deals. Broney's Alumni Grill at 7 W. Carpenter St., for example, offers $2.50 pint-sized Long Island iced teas. Two of these guys will have you buzzed in no time.
A lot of drink specials occur during the week to lure in business, but don't let that deter you from weekend bar fun. And there are also some recurring specials worth noticing. The Red Brick Tavern, 14 N. Court St., offers $2 Mega Mugs ' mugs holding 32 ounces of any domestic draft beer ' on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Pawpurrs holds Prime Time Monday through Saturday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. During this hour, all drinks ' and I mean ALL drinks ' are half price.
So before resorting to purchasing Keystone Light at Wal-Mart for a fun evening, check out these various establishments and their fun drink specials. Pretty much any bar in Athens serves alcohol at a highly discounted rate compared to most big cities, but these stand out among my favorites for nightly specials. Tilt ya glass back, Athens, and have a great weekend.
