Women's Basketball: Ohio looks to get first win of the season against IUPUI

Ohio (0-3, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) is taking on Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis (2-2, 0-0 Horizon League) Sunday in Indianapolis. Ohio is coming off a tough loss against a strong Ohio State team, while IUPUI is coming off a victory against Southern Illinois.

Here is everything you need to know as the Bobcats look to get their first win of the season:

Things to know:

  • IUPUI coach Kate Bruce was an assistant coach at Ohio from 2013-2016. During that time, Ohio went 62-33 and won consecutive MAC titles. She was also an assistant coach at Youngstown State and was the head coach at Walsh from 2016-2022. She had a very successful tenure there, where she had a 134-43 record and led the team to not only four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, but also the program's first Sweet 16.
  • Last season IUPUI went 24-5 and earned NCAA tournament berth after winning the Horizon League Championship. It was eliminated in the first round after losing 78-72 to Oklahoma.
  • Austin Parkinson, IUPUI's head coach last season, was hired by Butler after a strong career with IUPUI. With the hiring of Bruce, IUPUI looks to maintain its recent success.

Player to watch: Guard/Forward Rachel Kent

Kent, a senior from Des Plaines, Illinois, has had a solid start to the season after being named to the All-Horizon Third Team last season. Kent is averaging 8.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game so far this season. Her first two seasons were spent at Saint Louis, where she finished ninth all time in 3-pointers made. For the Bobcats to pull off their first victory of the season, they are going to have to limit Kent and her playmaking ability.
