The Ohio House passed House Bill 96, the legislature’s budget bill for the fiscal year 2026-2027 on April 9. The bill is currently being debated by the Ohio Senate committees and, if passed, will go to Gov. Mike DeWine for approval.

It is important to celebrate seniors because college isn’t an easy task, and everyone needs a reminder of what it means to be a graduate. Celebrate the college seniors and make the end of an era special for them. There are so many ways to make this time even better.

Three organizations in Athens County were recently awarded the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, grant, which is used to strengthen domestic violence services in communities. The Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) announced April 1 that $6 million in funds were awarded this year for a total of 93 grants to 46 counties in the state.

Ohio (31-13, 14-4 Mid-American Conference) lost to Ohio State (38-10-1, 11-5 Big Ten) by a score of 15-5. The game ended in five innings after Ohio was run-ruled. Ohio started off strong, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first along with multiple big hits, but lost momentum after that as Ohio State started to make its run.

The struggle of housing insecurity has been an ongoing problem in the Appalachian region due to a lack of shelter and resources for those in need. To combat this issue, HAPCAP put together the Sunset Shelter Project, which is a community initiative to turn the Sunset Motel on Columbus Road into a temporary housing shelter. Many local organizations, Athens community members and Ohio University students came together to help make a difference with this project.

In between visits to Arkansas and Wisconsin on its spring tour, indie rock titan My Morning Jacket stopped in Athens. Thursday night, audience members, including Ohio University students, community members and fans from all over the Midwest, filed into the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium to see the eclectic group preceded by Grace Cummings, an alternative singer/songwriter from Australia.
