Ohio’s national and state public lands have recently been affected by cuts to budgets and staffing. In the Ohio legislature's 2026-27 budget bill, the basic operational budget for Ohio State Parks and Watercraft, which includes nearby locations such as Strouds Run State Park and Burr Oak State Park, was cut in half. The state budget bill was signed by Gov. Mike DeWine in July and brought the Parks and Watercraft budget from $55 million in the 2025 fiscal year to $27.7 million in the 2026 fiscal year.

Tucked away in the middle of Appalachia, Ohio University’s campus is home to a multitude of creatures. Squirrels dart across roads and sidewalks, herds of deer graze at seemingly every street corner and birds fill the silence with their songs. These aren’t just cute animals. They should serve as reminders that our campus is home to more than just students and professors. We share this space with so much wildlife, and it is our responsibility to protect it.

This weekend, Ohio (1-2) travels to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to participate in the Chattanooga Classic. In this tournament, it will play against Cincinnati (1-1), Chattanooga (2-1) and Jacksonville State (1-2). Ohio had a rough patch of games to end the Bobcat Invitational and looks to get back on track with some wins.
