Ohio went on the road against Northern Illinois to begin its Mid-American Conference duals, losing after being unable to come back from an early 17-0 hole. There were some highlights for Ohio, but overall not enough to pick up a road win. Originally, the dual was scheduled to be at night, but an impending storm pushed it forward to the afternoon. Nonetheless, Ohio lost to Northern Illinois for the second straight season.

Although not the literal midpoint in the season, Ohio has gotten itself through the non-conference slate of its schedule. With all of the good for Ohio, there is palpable buzz regarding the chances for the team to capture its first conference title in 23 years.

As Ohio strolled into East Lansing, Michigan, it understood the tall task that was ahead. Going on the road and defeating a Big Ten program in wrestling is a rather large ask for any program, let alone one that has only begun to flex its muscles as a team. Although multiple Ohio wrestlers have defeated wrestlers from some of the larger programs, it is far from defeating the entire team. In its 30-11 loss on Saturday, Ohio showed some glimpses of how good it can be as a team in the upcoming conference duals.

Ohio got itself back on track on Saturday evening by defeating Drexel with a strong comeback to pick up its third win in duals on the season. The action was held in Vincent, Ohio. Despite the venue change, Ohio shook off a slow start to emerge victorious in its last action in Ohio for over one month.

Ohio faced some quality competition over the weekend as it took on several elite teams at the Navy Classic. After a day of wrestling, Ohio watched three wrestlers place while the whole team performed well and earned some significant wins to finish in a tie for seventh with a total of 58.0 team points.

Everything was riding on this moment for both Ohio and senior heavyweight Jordan Greer. Ohio had wrestled its way back into the match against Chattanooga in the opening match of its Tri-Meet. After facing a massive deficit early, Ohio crept back to make things interesting after a tech fall secured by Zayne Lehman in the 184-pound weight class, followed by a pin by Austin Starr in the 197-pound weight class. The score sat at 19-17 in favor of Chattanooga. As Greer heard his name come over the public address system in The Convo, coach Joel Greenlee uttered to him a simple message: win.

In the final match of the 2023 edition of the Bobcat Invitational, Ohio (4-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) will take on William & Mary (5-2, 0-0 Colonel Athletic Association). Between the teams, there is no history as this will be the first meeting.

In its second match of the Bobcat Invitational, Ohio (4-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) will face off against North Carolina State (5-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coastal Conference), the first and only Power 5 opponent on the schedule. NC State is coming to Athens riding a four-match win streak. When Ohio faces NC State it will be the second match of the weekend for both squads. The schools have met once previously, a 3-0 win by NC State in 2012.

For the first time in 2023, Ohio (4-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) will take the court at The Convo as it leads off the 27th Bobcat Invitational. The first opponent for Ohio on its home floor will be the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) (4-1, 0-0 Conference USA). Historically speaking, Ohio has gone 47-32 overall in past iterations of the Bobcat Invitational while head coach Geoff Carlston has fared well, going 7-1.

In its first three matches of the season, Ohio (2-1, 0-0 Mid American Conference) went 2-1 at the LD & B Insurance Invitational, hosted by James Madison. The three opponents were all good tests for Ohio to start the 2023 campaign as all of the teams reached the NCAA Tournament last season.

Ohio Volleyball (0-0, 0-0 MAC) will head down to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to open its season at the LD & B Invitational. James Madison (0-0, 0-0 SBC) will serve as the host this weekend, and the four teams are all mid-major foes with championship aspirations in their respective conferences.

Ohio softball saw a revitalization of its softball program in its first year under new head coach Jenna Hall. Ohio’s 32-23 record included a 20-9 Mid-American Conference record, showing marked improvement from its 2022 season by nine wins on the stat sheet.

In its final home series against Buffalo (12-35, 6-17 Mid-American Conference), Ohio will have the chance to win its first Mid-American Conference regular season championship since 2018.
