City, county officials plan years' projects

Both Athens County and City officials entered 2014 with resolutions of their own: see improvements at the local wastewater treatment plant, renovate the city’s parking garage, implement electric aggregation county-wide and seek a new location for the county sherriff’s office. But budgets can be sparse, more pressing issues can arise and projects can be put on the backburner. That’s why officials are now planning for the likelihood (or unlikelihood) of some of the area’s largest projects coming to light.

A riff on the charity show at Donkey Coffee & Espresso is now a full year into its life with the fifth instance of a “charity month” that will see money from the regular backroom shows given to the Athens County Food Pantry.

During several days from December 1959 to January 1960, Martin Luther King Jr. attended a conference at Ohio University, addressing the crowd on several occasions. Three years later, he led the famous March on Washington. Only five years after that, he was assassinated while standing on his hotel’s second-floor balcony in Memphis. Forty-five years after his death, the effects of his legacy are still felt on our campus and throughout the nation.
