Retention rates rise
Nov. 1, 2009Ohio University's first-year student retention rate rose again this fall, up almost 2 percent from last year and 4 percent from 2007.
'Recession gardens' replace victory gardens

In a time where prices are higher, 'recession gardens' are becoming increasingly popular, echoing the victory gardens which were planted during World War I and World War II which helped to reduce the stress and pressure of food shortages.
Kindle Store adds over 18,000 free public domain titles - plus fresh English classics remix
By By Communia | Nov. 1, 2009Recently Amazon has been adding public domain titles to its Kindle eBook store at a frantic pace: over 18,000 titles are now available as free downloads. The step is in addition to other 'remix' titles for sale, such as Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, that expands the original Jane Austen novel with "all-new scenes of giant lobsters, rampaging octopi, two-headed sea serpents, and other biological monstrosities", with some help by Brooklyn, NY-based writer Ben Winters.

I left the house a little before 9am, bought overpriced gas and started what would be a long, grueling day with a venti vanilla latte from the new Starbucks Coffee on 53rd Street and Elmore. It helped. I see in the news today that Starbucks is laying off (up to) 12,000 employees and closing 600 stores. I guess with $4 gas, not as many people can afford a $4 cup of coffee after filling up their SUV.
