Writer deprives senses in student-built tank

I was submerged in a pitch-black tank in a cell at The Ridges. Floating on water filled with 1,000 pounds of salt, I could sense little but the slight warmth of the water. There were no sounds but a distant humming. It was a peaceful coffin, free from the outside world. I was able for the first time since childhood to stare in the nothingness above, hoping to form pictures with my mind out of the air.

Financial fear-mongering unjustified

Before we delve into our nation's supposedly out-of-control deficit spending, and the forecasted end of our fiscal lives - by the time we all reach the age of 45 - let's start out by asking what the big deal is about being a few billion dollars in debt.

Just say no ...

It's Pat!

If you are like me, there are some times when thinking about all the pressing political issues of the world can get a little tiring. So when the world gets me down, I rely on picking up my views on the society with the ever-reliable Rev. Pat Robertson. I discovered one handy way I can listen to Rev. Pat's infinitely finite wisdom is referring to his Quote-a-Day Calendar.

Friday foible

In yet another attempt to curb unruly student behavior - and the reputation that accompanies it - Ohio University's administration is beginning to debate increasing the number of Friday classes Spring Quarter. Last quarter, OU President Roderick McDavis discussed extending scheduled class times through Friday to occupy students' time and control Thursday night revelry. However as the five-day university phenomenon is being analyzed in universities across the nation, it seems that here at OU it is just another misguided attempt to control student behavior.

Bias? Not exactly

In a unique vote on Dec. 29, Athens City Council approved the controversial retirement center project with only three members voting. Because the Ohio Ethics Commission had discouraged three members from voting a few days earlier, an incomplete council was forced to vote on an issue of significant local importance. The justification used to halt the votes of three council members is questionable, and the reasoning behind the decision too vague. In the end, it deprived officials from voting on an important matter and, though not legally binding, could set a troublesome precedent for future votes.
