Necessary boundaries
Apr. 25, 2008The story about Mt. Vernon 8th grade science teacher John Freshwater, who refused to remove a bible from his desk, has taken an interestingturn. It appears that not only did he keep a bible on his desk, but healso held healing sessions during school, went on tangents aboutintelligent design and creationism, and amazingly, burned crossesinto students' arms while demonstrating an electrical device.
Your Turn: Pennsylvania should continue to cling to their guns
Apr. 24, 2008Senator Obama's recent remarks expressing his belief that Pennsylvanians are bitter and that they cling to their guns may indeed be right on, and for a reason you may not even think of. So what on earth are they defending themselves against? Some boogeyman or creature of Pennsylvanian folklore? Actually, it's their state animal: the white-tailed deer. In 2006, the Keystone state was unlucky enough to claim the title for more deer-vehicle collisions per year than any state in the country, with around 99,000 motorists caught in the headlights

Mr. Right: Politics of fear are creating a culture of bigotry
Apr. 24, 2008During one of my classes this quarter, the discussion turned toward the politics of fear in a post-9/11 world. As one fellow student argued that infringements upon our civil liberties were justified by the prospect of new terrorist attacks and as another argued that racial profiling is justified by the preponderance of terrorist acts committed by those of Middle Eastern descent, it struck me just how much our culture has changed since September 11, 2001. In a pre-9/11 world, Americans valued their civil liberties, and racial profiling was taboo in most circles. All of that has gone out the window now, as the politics of fear promoted by the Bush administration have created a new culture of bigotry that most Americans don't even realize they're participating in.
