Housing contracts in progress

Some Ohio University students either have completed or currently are completing their housing contracts for the 2005-06 school year.

Pamela Drake, associate director of resident services, said the university gave students several reminders about the contract deadline. Students received an e-mail reminder March 14 to inform them the $50 housing deposit and contract were due by April 20.

Students received reminders through CATVision and more e-mails as the deadline approached, Drake said. Students also had the chance to ask questions and voice their concerns through four different online chats prior to the deadline or to visit the Business and Residence Services in person.

Cards that listed the times students were eligible to sign their contracts were sent to home addresses and local mailing addresses for students who do not regularly check their OAK e-mail accounts, Drake said.

Freshman Nick McMaster said he found out about the room selection process through e-mails and fliers posted in his residence hall. One complaint he had about the selection process is that he was not sure if he was on the right Web site.

I don't recall there being a link to the site on the e-mail

so I had to go on the OU Web site to access the page McMaster said.

Though he had difficulty finding the site, McMaster said it was easy to use and signing the contract only took about five minutes.

Students could apply for housing in four different stages with first priority given to those with the most credit hours. The students who had the same amount of credit hours were then entered into a lottery to choose who got to fill out contracts first.

Students who wanted to stay in the same room they lived in this year got to sign contracts during the first housing stage. Students who wanted to live in the same hall but in a different room got to sign contracts during the second stage.

The third stage included students who wanted to live in a different residence hall, and the fourth stage was for students who had not paid the deposit by the April 20 deadline or who were living off campus this year, Drake said.

Resident assistants go through a different room selection process because the online contract does not allow students to sign up for rooms designated for RAs. Joe Burke, director of Residence Life, said returning resident assistants send their housing contract through the department of Residence Life instead of accessing the online contract used by other students.

Students applying to be new resident assistants should go through the upperclassman room selection process in case they are not hired Burke said.

New RAs are not hired before the room selection process because some students have not completed the class by the deadline, Burke said.
