Class participation is the most vague term in the academic lexicon.
To some professors it means simply making it to class, and they'll take over from there. Yawn. For others, it means being engaged in the group conversation in which the professor acts as an intellectual liaison. The truth is that the experience of each class is governed by the role class participation plays; the only tragedy is that your grades don't feel the same way.
The biggest worry of any student willing to throw down their pair of pennies in an intellectual debate is that, through the intricate dynamics of any class, over time he or she will become the student classmates will spend smoking breaks belittlingly referring to as that guy/girl. That guy/girl is more ignominious than jerk, vagabond, and derelict wrapped in a tool tortilla.
Being labeled with this moniker can be the result of either: a) the perspective that guy/girl has gone out of his/her way to comment on every topic broached by the professor, regardless if they, you know, have anything at all interesting to add, or b) they+
