Ohio University Graduate Student Senate members expressed concern last night about the formation of an administrative position within the newly announced Graduate College.
Yesterday Vice President and Provost Kathy Krendl sent an e-mail to graduate students, faculty and staff announcing the establishment of a Graduate College, which will be fully implemented by next fall. Graduate Student Senate members reacted to the development at their regular meeting yesterday.
The college will be a collaboration of many graduate programs, including Graduate Council and Graduate Student Senate. The college will absorb the current budget and staff of Graduate Studies and will require an additional funding of about $90,000, according to the e-mail.
The college will be lead by a new administrator, the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and Dean of the Graduate College, according to the e-mail.
The former position of Vice President for Research, which has been vacant since December, will now take on further responsibilities ' a change that worries Senate President Dominic Barbato.
We wonder if the position would be overloaded
he said, adding that the new position seems like two full-time jobs streamlined into one.
But Katherine Tadlock, interim associate provost for Graduate Studies, said such positions are common among peer universities.
Senate members also questioned the delayed response of administrators to a proposal about the student assembly policy. The proposal, which suggests changes to OU's current policy, was submitted by a committee composed of graduate and undergraduate students May 3. Senate expected a response from administrators within two weeks, but has yet to receive one.
