Graduate students might have a college of their own, pending approval today by the Ohio University Board of Trustees.
The Academics Committee approved the creation of the college at yesterday's meeting. If agreed upon tomorrow, the college will join the 10 colleges already in place.
The college would handle graduate admissions and transcripts, along with other administrative duties. These currently fall under the department of Graduate Studies.
It's primarily for administration and record keeping G? that's the best characterization of the program I can give
said Dominic Barbato, president of Graduate Student Senate.
From a student perspective getting someone from a dean's level at an executive staff level who can advocate more graduate and any post baccalaureate education at Ohio University is always a plus Barbato said. That's something we haven't had here for a long time.
The committee also approved the addition of a bachelor's degree in nursing, which will become part of the College of Health and Human Services.
OU currently receives about 1,500 inquiries about the existence of a nursing program from potential students, said Kathy Krendl, executive vice president and provost, who acted as chairwoman of the committee.
The program anticipates 100 incoming students each year for the next four years, giving the program 400 undergraduate students by 2012.
There's a huge need for nurses statewide and nationally
so it's not as if we're not fulfilling a need for now and for the foreseeable future
said Gary Neiman, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, adding that the program will generate more revenue than it will cost.
A certificate in South East Asian studies was also approved. Both require full board approval today
