The Student Activities Commission received $100,000 in Vision Ohio funding as part of Ohio University's goal to spend more on student programming.
SAC created the Vision Ohio Programming Committee, which reports to the vice president of Student Affairs, to give money to university organizations for student event programming.
The programming committee, which received one-time Vision Ohio funding, is unlike SAC because it can award money to organizations that are not student-led as well as student groups. SAC is funded through the general fee.
Ideally
what we want is we want athletics we want the history department we want campus life
the dean of students to come and say
'Hey
with this money let's fund this program that students can benefit from
but it's not created by students
' said Chauncey Jackson, SAC commissioner and head of the programming committee.
OU invested $1.3 million of its reserves ' emergency savings totaling one percent of yearly income ' in various Vision Ohio goals this year hoping to increase revenue, said John Day, associate provost for academic budget. Now that the reserves are diminished, OU's Budget Planning Council will use any leftover money from the total budget while cutting some university programs to fund the second year of Vision Ohio, he said.
Although you can't destroy the basic operations of the university to fund Vision Ohio
the Board of Trustees places high priority on the five-year plan, Day said.
We have to decide what's more important
he said. Make the investments and decide where you're going to get the money later.
The programming committee is spending Fall Quarter discussing criteria for funding requests and reviewing proposals from university organizations.
The goal of the committee is to encourage collaboration between student organizations and university departments, Jackson said.
Jackson said he expects to approve all proposals by the third or fourth week of Winter Quarter and schedule a nice-sized event for spring quarter.
