Thousands of first-year Ohio University students gathered to hear President Roderick McDavis and other university administrators address academics and students' futures yesterday at the Convocation Center.
The class of 2014 has the opportunity to set an example for the future students of Ohio University
Student Trustee Kyle Triplett said. They can take (that) to heart ... and make OU a better place.
McDavis emphasized both success in school and fun when talking to first-year students.
The reason for students to be here is to get a degree McDavis said. (Students) need to have better study habits ... they have to step up to the plate and say that they are going to do better.
The faculty and administrators challenged students to create strong relations with a member of the faculty during their years at OU.
I want students to make it a priority to really get to know a faculty member during their four years here said Joseph McLaughlin, chairman of Faculty Senate. We are eager to help students in and outside of the classroom.
McDavis also encouraged students to get to know a faculty member, saying faculty members are easily accessible to students.
The university's student satisfaction rankings reflected OU's excellent student-faculty relations, he said.
Our rankings are proof of our university's commitment to excellence. Ohio University ranked first in the country in overall student satisfaction
McDavis said. We ranked so high because of our faculty. They help (students) achieve all that they can.
Students were also told about the new student Honor Code they were able to sign this year.
After two years of hard work
the Honor Code was finalized and voted on by (students)
Triplett said. Our honor code states that members of the Ohio University community will act in academic
social and civic responsibility. The class of 2014 has the opportunity to be the first to sign Ohio University's Honor Code.
