Athens welcomes 1st fitness store

Despite hard economic times, a new business opens its doors today and gave Athens its first fitness store.

Nutrition Pit Supplement Store, 743 E. State St., opened for business today, providing Athens with a specialty heath and fitness store.

The store carries a complete line of heath and weight loss supplements, vitamins and a full line of workout clothes, said Shane Corbitt, owner of Nutrition Pit.

Nutrition Pit will be Athens’ first supplement specialty store, said Corbitt.

“We did some research, and a few friends in the industry told us [Athens] would be an excellent location because there is hardly any competition,” he said, adding that as far as he knew, the closest other supplement store is in Parkersburg, W. Va.

The store hopes to market to both students and permanent residents, said Corbitt, adding that he expects business to pick up quite a bit upon the students’ return in the fall.

“I think we’ll still be OK (in the summer), but the big thing is getting the advertising going and getting our name out there,” he said.

Corbitt, along with his wife and son, have been involved in the fitness and bodybuilding world and have been interested in opening a store for a few years, he said.

“I think the business will survive (despite the economy), as the fitness industry is still booming,” he said.

The owners are hoping to open a second store in Morgantown, W. Va., in the fall and a third in Parkersburg in the spring. They are also looking to open branches in Columbus, Wheeling, W. Va., and Huntington, W. Va.
