Sometimes, change is a good thing, and Nelsonville’s 130-year-old Opera House seems to agree.
“We just like to mix things up because we fear becoming stale. We usually try to change (the fundraiser) up a bit every year,” said Tim Peacock, the executive director of Stuart’s Opera House, 52 Public Square.
Saturday night, the opera house will host its annual fundraiser, which will include new attractions such as VIP seats, a tour of never-before-seen parts of the venue, and a silent auction.
“The silent auction is a great thing, and some items are already online for bidding,” said Brian Koscho, the marketing and promotions director for Stuart’s Opera House. “There is a wide range. We try to get very unique and interesting items.”
Some highlighted objects within the auction include a weeklong trip to Sanibel, Fla., three hours of DJ service and local artwork, Koscho said.
The event will also feature the soul-like harmonies of the Holmes Brothers.
“When selecting the music, we try to find a group that plays fairly accessible music for the fundraiser so there is something for everyone,” Peacock said.
According to the Holmes Brothers’ publicist, Chris Levick, the band has played at the venue before, resulting in a good relationship. Levick also added that the brothers are happy to help and be a part of the program.
Sherman and Wendell Holmes, alongside Popsy Dixon, have been a part of the music scene for more than 30 years, playing with musicians such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson. The group recently released a new album celebrating Wendell’s triumph against cancer.
The venue has raised $12,000 to $15,000 at past fundraisers. This year, it does not have a goal set, but Peacock said he would consider similar proceeds a success.
“Funds from (Saturday) really just go back to the community. With the money, we create opportunities for children education, free movies, and even free outdoor concerts during the summer,” Peacock said.
The Stuart’s Opera House fundraiser will begin at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available online.
“I would say it is one of our most important nights of the year because it rejuvenates us, knowing we have support from the people,” Peacock said. “It’s a night where people can use their hard-earned money, that we appreciate, to show that they truly value what we do.”
