University tackles sex discrimination after complaint filed in 2009

Ohio University’s Human Resources department is reviewing the pay models for classified and administrative employees after receiving a complaint in 2009 about sex discrimination.

The department is bringing in a consultant to update job descriptions and make sure that classified and administrative employees are being justly compensated for the work they are doing.

In 2009, OU received a complaint from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights alleging discrimination against female classified and administrative employees, according to documents in the OU Board of Trustees’ January meeting agenda. The complaint addressed job grades and salaries, and in response, OU agreed to review administrative and classified employee pay scales.

“If we find instances (of sex discrimination), we will be reviewing that. We will be compliant with the Department of Education,” said Linda Lonsinger, OU’s chief human resources officer. “This was an anonymously based (complaint), but we have not received complaints from any specific person.”

According to the Board of Trustees documents, OU will review compensation of administrative and classified employees and establish procedures for future biennial reviews.

“Our goal is to create fair and equitable and competitive pay plans that help support the overall mission of the university and pay employees fairly,” said Karen Hudson, the director of compensation for Human Resources.

The new pay plan must be completed by December 2014. Human Resources has selected an outside consultant, who Lonsinger did not name because the contract has not yet been finalized.

“In a couple of weeks, everything should be finalized,” Lonsinger said. “We’re excited to get started, and we are looking forward to the new pay plans.”
