Court Street packed with afternoon culture celebration

International flags whipped in the breeze along the path through College Green up to Cutler Hall on Saturday morning, indicating that the annual International Street Fair was taking place only a few steps away.

The Athens City Council passed an ordinance to close Court Street, allowing more than 30 organizations to line the road. Ohio University departments, nonprofit organizations and international student groups all had different global offerings, including activities and food. Nations and regions represented ranged from Turkey to Southeast Asia.

Camila Lemaster, president of the International Student Union, said that the fair is not only a chance for groups to share their cultures but also a fundraising opportunity.

Ruisi Shen, a senior studying psychology, was part of the table selling egg tarts for the Chinese Scholars and Students Association. The sweet treats, she said, prompted a few customers to return.

“It’s a great opportunity to advertise about us, and get more people (interested in China) and explain what our culture is,” Shen said.

Kayla Wyers, a second-year grad student studying public administration, attended the street fair last year and said she returned because she enjoyed the performances and cultural opportunities the event offered.

“We are on our first (lap) up the street, we’ve seen a lot of people,” Wyers said. “It’s really exciting to see so many people in the community come together …  and so many people coming to enjoy these different cultures.”

A stage was also built in the middle of the fair, where performances took place along with an introduction by organizers including statements from Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl and OU President Roderick McDavis.

“(The fair is) a great way for our campus to celebrate our international perspective,” McDavis said. “We have a campus of over 100 countries, and we’re celebrating the food, the culture and the students. It’s a great way for us to come together.”

McDavis said the fair, which has been running for more than 30 years, is a great opportunity for both the university and the city of Athens.

“I think it shows all of us how similar we are,” McDavis said. “It helps us develop a very positive relationship with other (cultures) and helps us all develop a greater appreciation for our humanity.”
