All-nighters seem to be an inevitable part of college, just like going to class, hanging out with friends and going to the gym. Although all-nighters will crop up, having a plan can help keep the late-night cram session as efficient as possible.
Downing coffee and energy drinks nonstop might seem like the only way to stave off your heavy eyelids, but too much can actually make your studying much harder. In small amounts, caffeine can increase alertness. But large quantities it can cause nervousness, agitation and an increased heart rate, according to a previous Post article.
To avoid becoming distracted, health officials suggest taking a 10 to 15 minute break about every hour.
Finding a favorite study spot that’s quiet can also increase your focus.
“I’d say the Donkey is the best place to study because you can get coffee and it has a nice quiet atmosphere; it puts you in the work mood,” said Jessica Peck, a senior studying Russian.
Donkey Coffee and Espresso, 17 1/2 W. Washington St., is a favorite study spot for many Ohio University students.
“I like Donkey Coffee, it’s usually quiet enough so I can work but busy enough so I don’t fall asleep. … And there’s coffee, of course,” said Rebecca McCarthy, a junior studying communication sciences and disorders.
To prevent the weight gain that often comes with late-night snacking while studying, health officials suggest eating a large, healthful breakfast and dinner.
To store information, students should try to take a 90-minute nap. This will allow for rapid eye movement or REM sleep to store information and memories.
Even though there are many tips for increasing your all-nighter’s efficiency, when it comes down to it, getting your paper done before the night before it’s due is the best tip.
“Lack of sleep, even just 24 hours, results in the person’s responses being the same as a person who is legally intoxicated,” said Sandra Hoyt, an OU psychology professor. “Most people wouldn’t dream of taking an exam while intoxicated, so why do so with no sleep?”
