In their first screening of the school year, REACT to Film will be broadening their horizons, as they will be hosting their first screening in the Athena Cinema, screening Blood Brother.
“We reached out to the Athena through Alex Kamody, and talked about working together,” said Caitlin Stone, president of REACT to Film on campus and a senior studying video production. “We got money together to rent out a theater, and that was pretty much it.”
Centered on HIV/AIDS awareness, as well as poverty and volunteerism, the movie was selected to spark discussion on these topics and explore what emotions the film brings up. The group was able to rent out the theater by funding by the Senate Appropriate Commission’s funding.
“The film was beautifully shot, and evokes emotion about an important issue,” said Dahlia Graham, director of educational programs for REACT to Film.
Meghann Foss, a REACT to Film promoter and senior studying applied nutrition, said she believes that this film, directed by Steve Hoover, will ignite a strong conversation on campus.
“This film was selected because it really speaks to the college generation,” Stone said. “It tells the story about a young man who finds meaning in traveling abroad and making a difference, and I think it seeks to inspire more young people to do the same.”
Those who plan to see the film should perhaps bring a few tissues in hand, as Graham said the film is “a very heart-wrenching and heart-warming story” that will make some shed tears.
“Both tragic and inspirational, this film is sure to make you think and put your life into perspective,” Graham said.
The next REACT to Film screening will be How to Make Money Selling Drugs in Baker University Center Theater on Nov. 5. Stone was able to see the movie in New York with other REACT to Film chapter leaders, and calls the film “incredible.”
“We are going to try Baker Theater for our next screening; however, if this one goes over well we would love to continue screening at the Athena,” Stone said. “I definitely can see us screening there in the future.”
