Dorm Sweet Dorm: How to spice up your morning oatmeal

Ah, breakfast, the most important meal of the day. It’s easy to get in a rut with something as conventionally “blah” as oatmeal, but all that steaming bowl needs is a little creativity and imagination to switch things up. Look no further than your pantry (or snack inventory) for some breakfast inspiration.

Peanut butter

Not only does it melt in your bowl and in your mouth, but peanut butter is loaded with protein to power you through your morning. Let’s be honest, what doesn’t this glorious topping go with?

Nutella

Oatmeal is healthier than your average muffin or donut (which wouldn’t give you the a.m. energy boost you need). It still fulfills your morning sweet tooth, just be sure to go easy on how much you use.

Frozen fruit

Antioxidants are a college student’s best friend once cold and flu season rolls around (hello, immunity-boosting berries). Frozen fruit stays fresher longer than regular produce, so stock up and throw in a handful before cooking your oatmeal.

Canned pumpkin

Yes, this one might have made the list because it’s fall … and we could all use a little bit more Vitamin A in our diets. To really mimic that pumpkin pie flavor, add a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey.

These oatmeal additions are bound to wake up your taste buds, so don’t be surprised if Goldilocks comes knocking at your door for a tasty bowl of oatmeal (or in her case, porridge).
