Dorm Sweet Dorm: Recipes for movie snacks that aren't popcorn

Eating and watching movies have been the bread and butter of entertainment for decades. This is probably because it combines two things people love a lot: stuffing their face and relaxing. While buttery popcorn and candy are musts, why not add a few DIY items into your snack repertoire? Have your friends join the fun to speed up prep time.

Oreo truffles

- Package of Oreos (any variety)

- 8 oz package of cream cheese, softened

Crush Oreos until they turn into crumbs (a blender or rolling pin works best). Place cream cheese in a large bowl and gradually add the Oreo crumbs, mixing the two together each time. The mixture will become extremely thick, so feel free to use your hands. Continue until fully incorporated; there should be no visible spots of cream cheese. Roll mixture into 1-inch balls and freeze or refrigerate for one hour. Serve.

Caramel apple pretzels

- Caramel squares

- Pretzels (the waffle shape work best)

- Apples cut into small pieces

- Toothpicks (optional)

Cover a microwave-safe plate with pretzels. Place caramel squares onto pretzels and microwave 10 seconds, or until slightly soft — don’t let the caramels melt completely. Gently push an apple piece into each caramel. Allow some time for the caramel to firm up. Serve. This recipe was adapted from The Kusi Life.

Puppy Chow

- 4-5 cups Chex cereal

- 1/4 cup peanut butter

- 1/2 cup chocolate chips

- 3/4 cup confectioner’s sugar

Melt chocolate chips and peanut butter in saucepan (or in a large microwave-safe bowl), and stir until thoroughly combined. Add Chex cereal and gently stir until completely coated. Put the confectioner’s sugar into a sealable plastic bag and add cereal mixture. Shake until completely coated. Serve. This recipe was adapted from All Recipes.

Don’t be surprised if these snacks are gone before you’re halfway through the movie — they’re addictive. In the case that you do end up with leftovers, make sure to refrigerate them.
