Good Morning,

Today is the birthday of everyone’s favorite gloom-and-doom poet, Edgar Allan Poe.

Poe’s works, which include “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” exemplify gothic fiction (and Victorian angst). He was born Jan. 19, 1809.

Paul Jones, a professor in English literature at OU, said he plans on spending the day doing Poe-themed things.

“I plan on drinking some amontillado, petting my black cat (named Eddie, Poe’s familiar nickname), and listening for ravens croaking ‘nevermore’ and tell-tale hearts,” Jones said in an email.

Those things, of course, are references to some of Poe’s famous works (including “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Black Cat,” “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”).

According to Jones, the only real “tradition” that occurs on Poe’s birthday is the mysterious “Poe Toaster,” who offers a toast at the poet’s grave every year.

Jones encouraged students to read some of Poe’s work to celebrate his birthday.

“Perhaps go outside in the dark of night with some candles and read out loud some of his poems,” Jones recommended.
