Correction appended.

An Athens man was shot in the face early Thursday.

The Athens Police Department responded to a report that something had blown up in the man’s face at about 2 a.m. on Brown Avenue, according to an APD press release. Officers arrived and found Alex Andrews, 29, had been shot.

Athens County EMS transported Andrews to the emergency room. According to a Facebook post from a woman identifying herself as his mother, he has undergone his first surgery and hospital staff said he will live.

APD is investigating the shooting. According to a news release, the department believes it is an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community.

Ohio University operations are continuing as usual. The OU Police Department wrote in a tweet the shooting was “not connected to campus” and said people should be alert while they are outdoors.

According to his Facebook page, Andrews is the owner of Thunder Bunny Tattoo Parlor at 26 W. Stimson Ave. Staff at the parlor declined to comment.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact APD at 740-592-3313.
