Chipotle in Athens affected by nationwide security breach

The Athens location of Chipotle Mexican Grill, 41 S. Court St., was affected by a security breach that occurred at most of the restaurant chain’s locations.

Chipotle said an investigation into the breach found that malware designed to access payment card data from the point-of-sale systems was used by hackers between March 24 and April 18. The data the hackers received could include cardholder name, card number, expiration date and the card’s internal verification code.

“During the investigation we removed the malware, and we continue to work with cyber security firms to evaluate ways to enhance our security measures,” Chipotle said in a news release. “In addition, we continue to support law enforcement’s investigation and are working with the payment card networks so that the banks that issue payment cards can be made aware and initiate heightened monitoring.”

The release also advised customers to "remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud." Chipotle is offering further support to affected customers on its website.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told CNN on Sunday that "most, but not all restaurants may have been involved." A full list of locations affected by the breach is available on Chipotle's website.
