Fathers get the Athens treatment on Dads Weekend

Father figures flocked to Athens this weekend to celebrate Dads Weekend.

Dads and students participated in activities that were offered by Ohio University, such as mini golfing, movie watching and hiking.

On Friday, swarths of hockey fans watched Ohio play Davenport. Bird Arena was packed to the brim, with many spectators standing and watching the game through the glass on the south end of the ice.

Fans participated in cheers such as “Let’s go Bobcats,” “Na na na na, goodbye” as a Davenport player was sent off the ice and the usual “Hey, you suck” whenever the Bobcats scored. The fans also danced in the stands to songs, including “YMCA” and “Sweet Caroline,” during timeouts and between periods.

The rough play and fighting associated with hockey was in full swing when players from both teams started at least two fights on separate occasions. That resulted in many players being sent to their respective penalty boxes and one Davenport player sent off the ice entirely.

Madison Sowders, a freshman studying social work, attended the game with her father, Shane. The two are from Harrison.

“We haven’t seen too many hockey games before, but the experience was good,” Shane said.

Students and their fathers also participated in a mini golf course that was built in Alden Library on Saturday. The fee to play was $5 for nine holes or $10 for the whole course.

Engineering students designed two holes of the course, and players were able to vote on which course they enjoyed the most by putting golf tees in a jar.

Holes on the golf course featured the campus squirrels, The Convo and a rocket garden on the 18th hole.

The course also offered a 19th hole where, if players got a hole in one, they were allowed to take home a stuffed animal that lined the hole.

Father and daughter duo Ron and Emily Formoso competed against each other.

The two played the course twice that day, and Ron won both times. When asked what their favorite part was, Ron said “beating my daughter,” and Emily said “beating my dad.”
