Big and little siblings will get to “boogie” with A Boogie at the Sibs Weekend Concert.
The Black Student Cultural Programming Board will bring up-and-coming hip-hop artist A Boogie Wit da Hoodie to Sibs Weekend 2018.
A Boogie is best known for his song “Drowning,” which peaked at No. 15 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song has more than 170 million plays on Spotify.
Matthew Kinlow, the president of BSCPB and a senior studying pre-med chemistry, is looking forward to the performance.
“One of the things we pride ourselves in is bringing the hottest up-and-coming artists to OU,” Kinlow said. “A Boogie actually just dropped an album that peaked at number four on Billboard 200, so we’re pretty excited that he’s coming.”
With the help of Twitter and the general body of BSCPB, there was an overwhelming response to have A Boogie come and perform at Sibs Weekend, especially because this is one of the few hip-hop experiences Ohio University has to offer.
“Sometimes, using social media can be tricky when choosing an artist,” Kinlow said. “In past years, there has been a demand for artists that we can’t get because of contract issues, but I’m very confident this show will go as planned.”
Some people reacted to the announcement on Twitter:
A Boogie is currently on tour in Europe, but Kinlow believes his appearance at OU will be on par with the concerts he’s been doing so far.
“I think this concert will be pretty big for A Boogie,” Kinlow said. “But it will be nothing compared to what’s to come for him in the future.”
BSCPB is taking more precautions to avoid canceling the concert. Last year, hip-hip trio Migos was scheduled to perform but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict, according to a previous Post report. Migos would later be announced as a headliner of April's 15Fest.
“These contracts are a lot of work and a lot of fine detail goes into choosing an artist, especially of this caliber,” Kinlow said. “So it’s really not worth bringing in someone else if the original performer doesn’t come through.”
BSCPB has worked out all of those details and is looking forward to selling out A Boogie’s concert this Sibs Weekend.
“I’m honestly so excited for A Boogie to be coming to Athens, and I have a feeling it’ll be one of the best performances yet,” Kinlow said.
Sibs Weekend will be Feb. 2-4, 2018.
