Student death being investigated by APD

An Ohio University student died at OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital after he was found unresponsive in an apartment on Mill Street at about 3 a.m. Monday.

The Athens Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive man with an emergency squad sent to the apartment.

Collin Wiant, an 18-year-old from Dublin, was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital by Athens County EMS.

APD is currently investigating the incident, and his family has been notified, according to the report. APD has not identified any dangers to the public during the course of this investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when appropriate and in coordination with the coroner’s office, APD Captain Ralph Harvey said in the news release.

Carly Leatherwood, a university spokeswoman, confirmed the student died and said the university has not been informed regarding the circumstances of his death.

“The Dean of Students has been in contact with his family, and the university is providing support to students and employees affected by his loss,” Leatherwood said in an email.
