TV Review: Eleanor is the new Michael and Cheleanor is in jeopardy on the season finale of ‘The Good Place’

Last week’s episode of The Good Place ended with Michael (Ted Danson) having a panic attack and not being up to the task of playing The Good Place’s architect.

That’s when Eleanor (Kristen Bell) took on the challenge.

Eleanor assumed the responsibility of architect and welcomed the first resident of the Judge’s (Maya Rudolph) experiment. After the new resident met Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and she realized that he was a gossip blogger on Earth who set out to trash her at all cost, the core four realized that The Bad Place chose the new residents not based on how horrible they were on earth, but how horrible they would be for the core four.

“They didn’t just choose bad people, they chose the people who were the worst for us,” Eleanor said.

So Eleanor was not surprised when the next resident she was supposed to greet would be Chidi’s (William Jackson Harper) ex-girlfriend, Simone (Kirby Howell-Baptiste).

When the group finds out that Simone is the newest resident, Chidi knows that he is going to ruin the experiment somehow due to Simone’s perceptiveness. After a lengthy discussion, the group realizes there is no way to continue other than erasing all Chidi’s memories after he died in his original timeline.

“Guys, I have thought about this from every angle,” Chidi said. “If we don’t wipe my memory, I will, one way or the other, ruin the experiment.”

Though the plan was the only way, Chidi’s memory loss meant the end of audience’s favorite couple, Cheleanor. Audiences have been waiting three seasons for Chidi and Eleanor to finally get together, and just when their relationship seemed hopeful, The Bad Place pulled off the ultimate checkmate.

Before Chidi’s memory was erased, Michael gave him and Eleanor a video montage of their cutest moments from the first time they met until the present. As if the audience wasn’t heartbroken enough from the situation, they had to relive their favorite couple’s glory days right before the end. Their last words before saying goodbye made even the strongest hearts weepy.

“I wish we had more time together,” Eleanor said.

“Time means nothing,” Chidi said. “Jeremy Bearimy, baby. We’ll just get through this, and then you and I can chill out in the dot on the I forever.”

The episode ended with Chidi waking up and Eleanor assuming her position as the fake architect, welcoming him to The Good Place.

Here’s how audiences reacted on Twitter:

The Good Place will return for season four.
