Fun News Friday: Out of this world sports, emoji licenses and Gillibrand’s campaign

Is your week dragging on? Here’s some fun news to pick you up and carry you to the weekend.

France Creates an Out of this World Sport

The French Fencing Federation has introduced a new competitive sport, and you’ll never guess what it is. Think Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Yes, that’s right, according to Time Magazine, the fencing federation has decided to include lightsaber dueling as one of their competitive sports.

“Like virtuous Jedi knights, the French federation sees itself as combatting a dark side: The sedentary habits of 21st century life that are sickening ever-growing numbers of adults and kids,” according to Time.

Serge Aubailly, the federation’s secretary general, told Time in an interview that a lot of youth are not as invested in sports as they are gaming systems, and lightsaber dueling is one way of curbing that issue.

Emoji Licenses

In Australia, licenses might be getting a little crazy.

Next month, the Australian government is allowing the addition of emojis on license plates for a price, according to BBC. The emojis are for decorative purposes, and they only have a few available emojis.

These include the laughing-out-loud face, the winking face emoji, the cool sunglasses, the heart eyes and the traditional smiley face.

Gillibrand gets the ranch

At a campaign event in Iowa, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was interrupted by a woman who was searching for ranch, according to the Hill. Gillibrand, who is a presidential nominee, became distracted when a woman seemed to be coming toward her, only to announce she needed the condiment.

The democrat is already in a crowded primary will some fellow candidates including Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.
