Student Senate announces final eight candidates for student trustee

Student Senate announced Wednesday the eight candidates for the student trustee position, who serve on the Board of Trustees for two years.

Student trustees are selected by Ohio’s governor and must be in good standing with the university.

Student Senate will vote for the final five applicants at Thursday’s town hall, Vice President of Student Senate Hannah Burke said. The final trustee will be announced at the Leadership Awards Gala on April 17.

Here are the eight applicants:

Adam Boesinger

Boesinger, a sophomore majoring in marketing and economics, believes he is open-minded, able to reach out to others and is accessible.

“Through my position on Student Senate, my team helped express Ohio University’s values of inclusion, safety, and affordable education,” Boesinger said in an email.

Sam Carryer

Carryer, a freshman studying applied mathematics, is currently a senator in the Senate Appropriations Commission.

“I have learned about many different organizations, their representatives, and the events that are important to them,” Carryer said in an email.

Ellen Gill-Franks

Gill-Franks, a freshman studying English pre-law and criminology and sociology, is involved in seven organizations that allow her to speak to students from different areas of the university.

“I want to serve as spokeswoman for Ohio University students in the decision-making process of the board,” Gill-Franks said in an email.

Justin Kelley

Kelley is a sophomore studying accounting, financing, marketing and business pre-law. Kelley said he wants the student trustee position to give back to the community.

“I believe that universities have a unique opportunity and responsibility to help forge the path in a student’s life, create their destiny, or help them reach success beyond their wildest dreams,” Kelley said in an email

Ryan Steere

Steere, a sophomore studying biology, said he is interested in the student trustee position because it coincides with his personal values and motives.

“My own experiences and pursuits have taught me numerous skills by which to fulfill this position’s responsibilities and to achieve its desired results,” Steere said in an email.

Levi Toback

Toback, a first year student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D program, is researching parent-child interactions and school and community interventions. Toback said he wants to “advocate for the diverse needs and interests of all OU students.”

Toback attended Drexel University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and currently serves on the Psychology Department's Policy, Planning, and Administration Committee.

Eli Wanner

Wanner, a sophomore studying history in the Honors Tutorial College, said he has the time management skills and motivation the position requires.

“My connections to the HTC and the Voinovich School gives me a more intimate perspective on some of the lesser-known parts of Ohio University,” Wanner said in an email.

Daniel Warmke

Warmke is a graduate student studying media arts and studies and will be in the doctoral program in the Fall. He said he believes that graduate students should be represented as student trustees.

“I feel like I am well qualified to speak for a broad university constituency because I have experience as an undergraduate at OU as well as currently being a grad student,” Warmke said in an email.
