TV Review: Jane’s life imitates her art as Rose escapes prison on ‘Jane The Virgin’

It’s said that life imitates art, and Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has to find that out the hard way on this week’s episode of Jane The Virgin

Last week’s episode ended with Jane securing a publisher and Rose (Bridget Regan) planning something really big.

This week’s episode focuses on Jane meeting with her new book agent, and though she loves everything about the book, she thinks there needs to be a big climactic involvement of the crime. The publisher loved the part about Mateo (Elias Janssen) getting kidnapped but thinks there needs to be another huge Rose chapter.

Among her suggestions for big climatic endings, the publisher throws out the idea that Rose could have switched Mateo with another baby. This idea is something Jane never even thought about, so it sends her spiraling. After being unable to stop thinking about it, Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) decide to get a DNA test.

Meanwhile, Rogelio (Jaime Camil) gets the good news that his show has been picked up as a series on a major network but is unable to convince River (Brooke Shields) to get excited about it. River is completely fixated on mending her relationship with her daughter, after spending her life focused only on herself and her career. Rogelio decides he’ll help River mend the relationship so that she can get focused on the show.

Rogelio, being deemed the daughter-whisperer, is able to help River and her daughter, Pond (Eden Scher), mend their relationship. Only, things backfire for Rogelio when River tells him she’s officially moving the show to New York City because Pond wants to move back there. Rogelio is now faced with a choice between staying with his family where they’ve completely rooted their lives or moving to New York City to further his career as an actor.

The episode has a big win for Alba (Ivonne Coll), as she finally gets to confront Magda (Priscilla Barnes). After Alba was pushed down the stairs and hospitalized by Magda in season one, the two have had an ongoing feud. Alba finally gets the chance to confront Magda by recording her saying incriminating things and using the blackmail to get her to leave town.

“I’m not scared of you anymore because I am an American now, bitch,” Alba said.

Jane and Rafael get the DNA test results back, and they are reassured that Mateo is their biological child. After Alba tells Jane about her confrontation, it finally gives Jane the ending she needs for her novel and in real life. She needs to build up the heroine with a confrontation, meaning in real life, she needs to confront Rose. Rafael reluctantly takes her to the prison to see Rose, but when they arrive, the two are met with some mortifying news: Rose has escaped.

Rose creates a huge distraction with several other people disguised as herself and is able to escape from prison. She goes to an abandoned warehouse to meet Luisa (Yara Martinez), and at the same time, Jane and Rafael find out that Luisa has been working with the police to bring Rose down the whole time but couldn’t disclose that information to either of them.

Unfortunately, the capture doesn’t go as planned, and Rose escapes, leaving the audience — and Jane — to wonder what this means for the safety of Jane’s family and the heroine herself. With only two more episodes of Jane The Virgin left, it’s impossible to know what will happen next.

Here’s how audiences reacted on Twitter:
