Weekender Briefs: What’s happening, rescheduled or canceled this weekend

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening and events that have been rescheduled or canceled:

Friday, May 8

Disco Night Live From Quarantine at 8 p.m., hosted by WOUB. Join DJ Barticus as he streams a disco party right into audiences’ homes. People can tune in through Twitch or Instagram.

Tarot Tea Party at 8 p.m., hosted by Moon and Wheel. Join Dr. Jessie Rose for a virtual night of tea and tarot card readings. To receive the Zoom link, RSVP to the Facebook event and join the Moon and Wheel mailing list on its website

Saturday, May 9

Shadow in the Moon at 8 p.m. at Donkey Coffee and Espresso has been moved to stream due to the quarantine. The spooky folk rock duo from Lancaster is made up of Jessica Bouffioux and Kurt McGinnis, and they’re excited to bring their show directly into audiences’ homes while they enjoy coffee or a different beverage of their choice.

Tuesday, May 12

Virtual Drop-In Food and Farm Enterprise Center at 3 p.m. hosted, by Appalachian Center for Economic Networks, or ACEnet. Due to the public’s growing interest in local meat, ACEnet decided to host a drop in forum to introduce local producers to the ACEnet Food and Farm Enterprise Center, or the meat processing facility. The forum is intended to provide a space to share information on the facility’s production capacity, requirements for using the space and any other questions people have. Join ACEnet’s Chris Quolke, manager of the Nelsonville Facility, who will be answering questions from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Zoom

Thursday, May 14

Blood Drive with Bickle Insurance at 1 p.m., hosted by Bickle Insurance Services. During the tough times of the pandemic, the American Red Cross is in high need of blood. Bickle Insurance partnered with the American Red Cross to give back. Appointments are to be scheduled through this link. The drive will go from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Bickle Insurance’s new office: 84 Columbus Circle.

Friday, May 8

KayBirds perform at Casa Nueva at 9:45 p.m. at Casa Nueva Restaurant & Cantina. The Victorious KayBirds were going to perform in honor of the end of the school year, inviting all Athenians and even summer school students and parents as well. However, the event has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

Saturday, May 9

3-D Felting: Pocket Pets at 1 p.m. at The Dairy Barn Arts Center. This introductory level felting class is for adults and children 10 and older. The workshop is meant to give a basic understanding of the versatile art of needle felting, with all materials being provided. The event has been canceled due to the coronavirus.

Alyssa Hankey performance at 7 p.m. at Little Fish Brewery has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus. The artist was born and raised in Pittsburgh and has been shaping her music since she was a teenager. Now, she’s released two full-length albums and has performed in grassroots tours across the country. The performance will be rescheduled, but the date is TBD.

Monday, May 11

Chasing Whiskey: Untold Story of Jack Daniels at 7 p.m. at the Athena Grand. The documentary follows the brand Jack Daniels and how it gained the fame and notoriety it possesses today. This screening of the documentary has been canceled due to the closure of movie theaters.
