Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, June 26

80s Night LIVE From Quarantine at 8 p.m., hosted by WOUB Public Media and DJ Barticus. Though businesses are starting to open up, DJ Barticus wants to be safe by hosting live streams in quarantine. Join through Twitch.tv or through Instagram @bartykutz.

Silver Lining Poetry Party at 6 p.m., hosted by ARTS/West and Athens Poet Laureate Wendy McVicker. Everyone is encouraged to bring a poem that’s meaningful to you, and share it with the group or just listen.

Saturday, June 27

Rally for OU workers at 10 a.m., hosted by Ohio University AAUP. Show support for AFSCME workers by lining the sidewalks along East State Street to demand OU Administration rescind layoffs of essential workers, negotiate in good faith for a fair contract and protect the community. Bring signs and a mask, and make sure to maintain physical distance.

Sunday, June 28

Virtual Summer Solstice Yoga & Craniosacral Meditation at 7 p.m., hosted by Spiral Path Therapies. This virtual class from Erin Pfahler and Hannah Simonetti will celebrate the summer solstice and bring awareness to the solar plexus chakra or Manipura. There will be a 60-minute yoga practice followed by a 30-minute guided meditation. The class is pay what you can, and $5-25 donations are accepted through PayPal to epfahler91@gmail.com or Venmo @erinchrstineyoga.

Monday, June 29

Virtual Yoga + Writing in a Pandemic with Erin Pfahler at 7 p.m., hosted by Bodhi Tree Guesthouse & Studio. This class creates a space to move, breathe and reflect. This is part of a larger class that happens weekly and is offered through Zoom with pre-registration required.

Southeast Ohio Peer Support Network Wellness Symposium 2020 at 11 a.m., hosted by The Gathering Place. The fifth annual Wellness Symposium is sponsored by OhioMHAS and will last until 2 p.m. Visit its Facebook page for tickets.

Wednesday, July 1

Virtual Training Series: Facebook for Business Advanced Ads at 9 a.m., hosted by Small Business Development Center at Ohio University and WV Social Media Consultants, LLC. Learn all of the tricks you’ll need to market your business through Facebook. Walk through how to set up successful ads, explore analytics and learn how to scale ads to get the most out of your advertising dollars. You will need a computer and internet access. CASA Book Club at 4 p.m., hosted by Athens County CASA/GAL Program. This month’s book is a collection of poems from Jamal May called “Hum.” There will be a virtual discussion of the book, and people are welcome to participate no matter how far into the book they are.
