Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, July 31

Athens Rocks! All Abilities, Touch-Free Community Rock Hunt all day Friday, hosted by ARTS/West and Athens Community Center. Join them for the rock hunt, where you use the map to find all 12 rocks throughout the city of Athens. Post photos of your rock hunting to the event page until the end of the day Friday.

Slow Jams Live From Quarantine at 9 p.m., hosted by DJ Barticus and WOUB Public Media. Though places have started to open up, DJ Barticus feels mass gatherings aren’t the greatest idea for people’s health. Join the livestream through Twitch.tv or through Instagram @bartykutz.

Saturday, Aug. 1

Asylum Tour at 2 p.m., hosted by Southeast Ohio History Center. Join tour guide George Eberts for an outdoor tour of the Athens Asylum. Masks are encouraged, and social distancing will be practiced. Meet at the Kennedy Museum of Art in front of the large Kirkbride Building of the Athens Asylum.

Admission: $15 for members, $18 for non-members; free for children under 12

Piercing and Embellishment demonstration at 5:30 p.m., hosted by the Dairy Barn Arts Center. Join artist Larry Weese Jr. on the patio for about an hour to see how he created his pierced wood pieces. Masks and social distancing are required, and a video of his live demo will be projected on a screen so the audience can see the details. If it rains, the event will be moved indoors. Make your reservation quickly, as space is limited.

Monday, Aug. 3

Silver Lining Moments at 10 a.m., hosted by ARTS/West and the Athens poet laureate. Join Wendy McVicker for a weekly reading of a poem of her choice that she hopes will bring joy and comfort to listeners in this uncertain time. People can tune in through Facebook.

What Are You Looking At? at 10 a.m., hosted by ARTS/West. Come see this solo show featuring the photography work of recent Athens High School graduate Darian Knapp. The show will be on display from Monday, Aug. 3, until Friday, Aug. 28, and is viewable by appointment. Wednesday, Aug. 5

Hike our Appalachian Woods at 8 a.m., hosted by the Dairy Barn Arts Center. Join woodland educator and outreach liaison Meghan Ellis for a socially distanced group hike through the Ora Anderson Trail. Masks and a distance of 6 feet apart are also required. Please email lyn@dairybarn.org if you’re planning to participate. Hikes will meet in the parking lot 10 minutes before start times, and bathrooms are not available.

Thursday, Aug. 6

Produce Auction at 5 p.m., hosted by Chesterhill Produce Auction. Head to 8380 Wagoner Road for a weekly fresh, seasonal produce auction that will last around two and a half hours.
