Mid-American Conference announces plan to play fall sports in the winter, spring

Fall sports is looking to move seasons for a year.

In an announcement by the Mid-American Conference on Monday, a plan to play the fall sports of volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey in the winter and spring was released after being approved by the MAC Council of Presidents and Directors of Athletics. Men’s and women’s cross country plans have not been finalized yet.

The three sports will play in a modified conference season that will allow teams and fall student-athletes to participate in NCAA competition. Different recommendations were given for each sport in the announcement, which highlighted what days of the week that matches should be played, schedule length and championship requirements.

The plans were designed to minimize COVID-19 safety risks and facility and staff conflicts.

“We look forward to providing a safe environment for our fall student-athletes to return to the fields and courts this spring to compete for MAC Championships,“ Ohio Director of Athletics Julie Cromer, who chairs the MAC Coordinating Committee, said.

Fall sports were initially postponed in August. Football has been the only MAC sport to get an official schedule release since then.
