Athens City Council met on Monday to hold a special session to discuss an ordinance making appropriations for the city’s budget in 2023.
Councilmember Alan Swank, D-4th Ward, said according to the auditor’s reports, the city is looking at an estimated $82 million in revenue in 2023.
Although $52,435,278 will be appropriated toward the city’s expenditures, approximately 36% of the city’s budget for the fiscal year will remain unappropriated, Swank said.
Councilmember Sarah Grace, D-At Large, said it makes sense there is unappropriated revenue because the city is unsure of everything that is going to happen within the next year.
“This budget process is a continual process of updating and changing,” Grace said. “The world we live in is continually adjusting around us, and we have to look at it as a fluid process.”
The ordinance allowing the 2023 budget appropriations was approved.
