Rock Christmas songs

As the year draws to a close, the Christmas season begins. However, the same Christmas pop tunes and carols you’ve heard since childhood can get boring. To satisfy the need for variety, here is a list of rockin’ Christmas songs:

“Step Into Christmas” by Elton John

“Step into Christmas” is a great start to the season, with a general lightheartedness and a peppy beat that makes you want to smile while wearing your Santa hat.

“Father Christmas” by The Kinks

In “Father Christmas,” British band The Kinks takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to Christmas songs, opting to tell the story of a mall Santa who gets beat up by a gang of kids who are angry that he won’t give them money instead of presents.

“Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys

Who would have thought surf rock and Christmas would go together so well? This 1964 classic blends the genre and theme into a fun, sunny song to listen to even in the midst of a dreary December.

“Happy X-mas (War is Over)” by John Lennon

Perhaps you’ve heard this song on TikTok already; however, if all you’ve heard is the 15 second audio snippet, you’re missing out. A song that both wishes the listener a Happy Christmas and urges them to not continue supporting the Vietnam War, it’s a yearly must-listen.

“Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You” by Billy Squier

“Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You” is a simple yet sweet song. While major issues don’t fade with the season, Squier proclaims that Christmas is a time to not worry as much about them, instead finding joy in loved ones, holiday sentiments and the general feeling of the season.

“I Believe in Father Christmas” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Comparing the snowy, wintry Christmas of years past to the rain-soaked, dreary Christmas of the modern era, “I Believe in Father Christmas” is a song for those who are struggling to find the magic of the season again, trying to keep a light heart and continue wishing for a good one.

“Please Come Home For Christmas” by The Eagles

The holidays are a time for reuniting with loved ones, which means there is a melancholy in the uncertainty of whether or not you’ll be able to see them. The Eagles set this feeling to music, painting a picture that becomes all too relatable with age.

“Thank God It’s Christmas” by Queen

Queen is no stranger to writing about social issues, but they take a softer approach to this song, explaining that it seems like the world pauses for a moment, allowing everyone to have a pleasant, joyful night away from those issues.
