Police blotter: bathroom vandal, donkey gone wild

Wednesday, July 16

Mobile home mishap

A homeowner on Bean Road in The Plains called requesting to report a trespassing issue. 

After the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded, the homeowner told deputies someone had been living in her abandoned trailer. 

According to a press release, the suspect or suspects are unknown. 

Where’s Waldo?

Athens County Sheriff deputies completed a well-being check for a man on Poston Road. 

After arriving on the scene, deputies were unable to make contact with the man but later learned he was at the hospital.

Possible domestic dispute

A third-party reported a possible domestic dispute on Columbus Road. 

After speaking with tenants, deputies learned only one person lived in the apartment where the alleged noise was coming from. 

According to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies advised tenants in the unit above the reported noise to contact their landlord instead of causing a disturbance. No further action was needed.

Thursday, July 17

Donkey Kong

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a donkey in the roadway in Longview Heights. After locating the donkey, it ran away when deputies attempted to approach it. 

According to a press release, deputies contacted a local farm close to the area where the donkey was seen, which said it did not belong to them. 

The donkey had left the roadway, and an owner could not be identified. No further action was needed.

Mystery Machine

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office was requested to hold the scene of a traffic crash by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. 

When arriving on the scene, deputies could not locate the crash, but did notice signs of a car that may have gone off the road.

Deputies were unable to locate the vehicle in question and returned to patrol.

Scrap metal bandit

A theft was reported on Pearl Wood Road in Albany, after a woman reported her brother for stealing scrap metal off her property. 

The caller told deputies she had scraps of steel next to the driveway, which were missing the morning after her brother was there.

According to a press release from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, the caller spoke with her next-door neighbor, who is also her mother. She told deputies her brother left with a large amount of scrap metal in his truck bed. An investigation is still pending.

Friday, July 18

Bathroom vandal

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies took a report for vandalism at the bathrooms of Jacksonville Park. According to a press release, there is extensive damage to the sink and toilets.

Bones found 

Deputies were dispatched to state Route 550 for a report of unknown bones under a home, according to a press release.

Responding deputies contacted the coroner’s office, which determined the bones were animal in nature.

Saturday, July 19 

Suspicious person

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person at state Route 682 in The Plains. Upon arrival, deputies noted two open doors. After clearing the building, deputies found no one inside.

According to a press release, no criminal activity was observed, and deputies resumed patrol.

Sunday, July 20

AEP break-in

AEP security reported to the Athens County Sheriff’s Office a break-in at a fence behind a facility on state Route 682 in Athens.

Deputies responded and found an area of tampered fence. Responding deputies also obtained video footage of the suspect. According to a press release, the case is still under investigation.

Monday, July 21

Extended car warranty

Deputies from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office took a report about a potential online scam out of New Marshfield. 

A resident said a person from Delaware, Ohio, attempted to extort them with Apple gift cards. 

The gift cards were allegedly in exchange for not releasing a photograph taken from a social media account, the press release said. The resident said the scammers did not get any other vital information from them and had already blocked them. 

Chat-room dad

Athens County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a harassment complaint from a woman regarding her ex-boyfriend. 

The caller said her ex-boyfriend was trying to contact her children through a chat room on a video game. 

According to a press release, the ex-boyfriend resides in another county, and the case is still under investigation. 

You’ve got warrants!

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies located a man in Millfield with an active felony warrant. The man was wanted for a warrant out of Muskingum County. 

Deputies placed the man under arrest after arriving at his residence. The man was taken to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail without incident, according to a press release. 

Tuesday, July 22

Anything for a deal

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a trespassing complaint at a Dollar General in Albany. Deputies spoke with the manager and then served the suspect a copy. 

According to a press release, the suspect was advised not to return to the business. No further action was taken. 

It’s stuck! 

Deputies responded to a report of a woman getting her debit card stuck in The Plains’ Hocking Valley Bank ATM. 

Athens County Sheriff’s deputies obtained the card and returned it. No further action was needed.
