OUPD reports shooting on W Union Street near Depot Street

Correction Appended: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that a police code denoting a vehicle accident with major injuries had been reported. A correction has been made to accurately denote the code as a roadway block and an arrest record check.

This story has been updated with final information from law enforcement.

The Athens Police Department responded to 93 West Union Street regarding a woman who was shot. The Ohio University Police Department provided assistance and transported the woman to a Columbus-area hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.

The university issued a shelter-in-place advisory, urging people in the area to stay indoors, remain alert and avoid the area.

UpCycle Ohio Thrift Store, located at 751 W Union St, posted on Facebook that it was told by the Athens Police Department that the situation involves a stand-off between the suspect and the police at Beasley Mills, a senior living facility.

APD said it was unable to comment.

According to an Athens public broadcasting dispatch radio, police reported a code denoting assault with the intent of using a weapon at 1:39 p.m. A minute later, a code indicating a roadway block and an arrest record check was requested, followed by a report of aggravated wounding, and then a request for officer backup. There have been no other updates on the dispatch radio.

After unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the suspect at his apartment, the Athens County Special Response Team and the Columbus Division of Fire’s Bomb Squad used a drone to gain access to the apartment where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted injury.

At 5:22 p.m., APD said the threat is contained and there is no further risk to the public.
