Tracking Trends: Students express themselves through winter fashion

While there are many downsides to winter, fashion is not one of them. Layered dressing in the winter allows people to express themselves through fashion, often producing new trends that keep people both warm and stylish.

“You have more opportunities to layer and wear more fun things, where, like in the summer, you are just sweating,” Kaylee Cundiff, a junior studying psychology, said.

Almost every year, a specific pattern resurfaces and becomes a viral trend. This year polka dots were a strong contender for pattern of the year, lasting far past the summer and now into the winter months. Polka dots can be seen this winter not only in sweaters and cardigans, but also in scarves and hats.

Knitted sweaters and sweaters in general are also an age-old winter staple. Other staple pieces include boots, scarves, hats and coats.

“I’ve seen a lot of pea coats, and a lot of people have been wearing their scarves over their heads,”  Aniyah Spaulding, a freshman studying criminology and sociology, said.

Shoes are another fun way to show off your passion for fashion. UGGS have been a favorite boot amongst students for years, pairing perfectly with jeans and leggings. UGG boots come in a wide variety of styles, with prices usually ranging from $85 to $150.

“Long boots, like UGG boots, like super furry ones; They’re so cute. I need to see more,” Spaulding said.

Layering is the key to winter fashion. Scarves and hats can elevate a look. Pairing jeans and a sweater with thick socks and a fashionable coat can enrich one’s outfit and help them stay warm.

Scarves are always a staple for the winter, but particularly this winter, many people can be seen wearing extremely thick, colorful scarves. Scarves can even serve as the focal point of the entire outfit. You can either drape a scarf over your shoulder or wear it on your head to protect from winds.

Sequins have been popping up everywhere this winter, especially during the holiday season. However, this trend is still popular for a night out or a fancy occasion. Sequins are most worn on miniskirts and dresses. To keep warm in the winter, pair with fleece-lined tights.

Another trend this winter has been fur. Winter runways have displayed lots of faux fur apparel. Fur goes effortlessly with jeans and boots. Faux fur outerwear paired with a going-out outfit can provide a chic touch to the look.

“I’ve been noticing like a lot of fur hoods, like I’ve seen Hollister fur hoods,” Kyle Rhoads, a freshman studying music production, said. “A lot of fur hoods are coming back, and I love that. Even like the fur boots, I’ve seen a lot of that.”

Rhoads also shared his winter staple.

“Sunglasses because the wind is so strong in the winter for me, and I have sensitive eyes, so I wear sunglasses in the winter,” Rhoads said.

Countryside chic is also a huge trend this winter. Heritage fabrics like corduroy and tweed are popular and patterns like plaid on coats and sweaters. Long boots like Hunter boots and Chelsea boots are also a significant part of the trend. This trend is practical yet preppy.

Many of these trends are affordable and can easily be added to your closet. After all, fashion can make the winter months less dull.
