One of the major questions many incoming students have is how to get involved with their majors on campus. Luckily, it's very easy - there are about 350 registered student organizations at Ohio University.
At the beginning of the school year, the Student Involvement Fair takes place on College Green. More than 200 organizations showcase information about their group and OU pride. This even provides the easiest way to get involved early.
Ann Addington, administrative associate for the Campus Involvement Center, said that there's also an online directory students can use to find groups that fit their interests. They can search by name, category or contact information at www.ohio.edu/campuslife/sorgs/index.cfm.
There's so many different things to choose from
Addington said. It's one-stop shopping for students to get involved.
In addition to the Campus Involvement Center, Career Services provides free assistance for students concerning their professional development and future job searches. Career counseling is also available for students who aren't sure of their majors.
Work with us early said Thomas Korvas, director of the Office of Career Services. The big point is to come see us early. As long as they (students) come see us we can take it from there.
Rob Talamo, a junior studying marketing, is the president of the ExSell Sales Club at OU. The club is open to all majors and holds various philanthropy events for foster children.
We try to really reach out and excel
Talamo said, adding he has made many friends and developed professional skills from his involvement.
Even though he was hesitant to join as a sophomore, Talamo said he fell in love with the group and encourages all new students to find something that appeals to them.
I wish I would have gotten involved earlier
he said. But don't overbook yourself (with activities). Pick one
two
maybe three
and dedicate yourself.
Addington agrees with the importance of involvement.
Students involved in activities outside academics makes them more well-rounded
she said.
Addington said there are many other benefits to student involvement, such as strong leadership skills and the formation of relationships.
I see (benefits) every day
she said. These students leave OU in a better position. It's a win-win situation.
