Steering committee eases students into semester transition

With Ohio University students and advisors preparing to schedule for fall semester, new resources are being rolled out to ease the process.

A registration assistance center run by Allen Student Help Center staff is now open on the first floor of Baker University Center near the Technology Depot to assist with registration, said Jenny Klein, director of Bobcat Student Orientation and an Allen Student Help Center academic advisor.

“We're not replacing advising but assisting students in any help needed in advising and signing up for classes,” Klein said.

After a recent Q2S steering committee meeting outlined the struggles students may have during registration, Klein decided to use a similar process to student orientation to assist students in registering for the fall, said Linda Lockhart, manager of communication for the Q2S transition.

Staff will be able to help with all aspects of the PeopleSoft system including loading students shopping carts, locating TDCPs and DARS reports, and preparing students for their registration day, Klein said.

At least two computers and more laptops will be reserved every day for the help, she said.

Members of the staff were working with the system all last week to gain experience and help with FAQ, Klein said.

“We really don’t know how many students will take advantage of the resource but can only hope anyone with questions comes,” Klein said.

Along with the extra assistance, a toolkit has been created on the Q2S website to assist both advisors and students by putting three key functions on one screen with tabs to more Q2S help, Lockhart said.

“I think the toolkit is fantastic and everyone should bookmark it immediately,” Klein said.

Although the toolkit is primarily designed for advisors, it may be helpful to any students who did not complete a TDCP or cannot view theirs online yet, Lockhart said.

Everything listed on the site is located somewhere else on the Q2S site except for a notes tab created to easily share information with all advisors, Lockhart said.

A link to the toolkit was sent to all advisors last week, she said.

“I’ve already found the notes section important and think it’s helpful to everyone having all the components on one page,” said Lisa Kamody, director of student and community engagement.

The Q2S committee is asking anyone who finds discrepancies during advising and scheduling to contact the Q2S office, Lockhart said.

“The idea is hopefully we catch any littler problems over look now, so we can address them prior to fall,” she said.
