What Ohioans are searching in the 2018 elections

As the Nov. 6 election approaches, Ohioans are taking to Google with questions about their ballots.

Here’s what Ohioans have been searching about the election:

Issue 1

Search interest in Issue 1, which would lower penalties for nonviolent drug offenses, has been gradually rising over the previous 90 days.

The measure, which seeks to lower Ohio’s prison population and reinvest the resulting saved money in communities, has been heavily debated. Proponents of the measure say it could help the state address addiction, but opponents say it could normalize drug use through depenalization.

Ohio Governor

Democrat Richard Cordray is facing off against Republican Mike DeWine in a battle to become Ohio’s next governor.

Cordray, the former director of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and DeWine, the Ohio attorney general, are in a close race, according to FiveThirtyEight.

U.S. Senate

Incumbent Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is being challenged by U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Wadsworth, for a seat in the Senate.

While search interest has been generally higher for Brown over the last year, Renacci got a boost in May when he was endorsed by President Donald Trump.

The 15th Congressional District

Incumbent Steve Stivers, R-Upper Arlington, is being challenged by Democrat Rick Neal for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to Ballotpedia, Stivers has represented the district since 2011.
