Weekender Briefs: Enjoy a night at the museum, visit local parks

Friday, May 20

The Disability Equity Presentation and Discussion will take place online at 11 a.m. The event, hosted by the Southeastern Ohio Disability Equity Coalition, will discuss the effect of ableism on people with disabilities. The event will be facilitated by Billy Peacock. 

Admission: Free

The Wastemen, No Static, Mean and Cheese Collective and Appalachian Soup Company will all take the stage at The Union, 18 W. Union St., at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. for this exciting event, hosted by Blackout Booking. Come enjoy some electric local music. 

Admission: $8

‘80s Night with DJ Barticus returns to Casa Nueva Restaurant & Cantina, 6 W. State St., from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. Come enjoy the summertime with some classic ‘80s hits.

Saturday, May 21

A Spring Craft Show at Christ Community Wesleyan Church, 6275 Kenney Memorial Lane, will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event, hosted by Native Creations, will take place both indoors and outside, and will exclusively feature handmade vendors. Food will also be available for purchase, both inside and from outdoor food trucks.

Admission: Free

A Food Rally and Cruise In will be held at the Athens County Fairgrounds from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. The event, hosted by Penny McCune, will raise money for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The cruise in will feature seven food vendors as well as several raffles and a trophy for the fan favorite car.

Admission: $10

A Night at the Museum invites participants from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Southeast Ohio History Center, 24 W. State St. The night intends to showcase Southeast Ohio’s diverse cultural and racial history. Participants will “meet” famed historical figures who will share their stories.

Admission: $15 general admission, $12 member/student admission, $5 admission for children aged 5-12, children under 4 are free

Kids to Parks Day will take place from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Richland Avenue Park, off of Richland Avenue and Dairy Lane. Hosted by Athens Community Center, the event invites any and all kids to join for field games. Expect tug of war, an obstacle course, ring toss, water games, and more.

Sunday, May 22

A Community Festival from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. will celebrate the three-year anniversary of Kindred Market, located at 284 E. State St. The celebration will include local music, art and food, including dishes by Chelsea’s Real Food and Symmes Creek. The event will also feature tarot card readings, a paddleboard raffle and face painting.

Admission: Free

Join a Scottish Dance Class from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Ohio Valley School of Celtic Dance and Culture, 70 N. Plains Rd. The beginner-friendly Scottish folk dance class will teach Scottish Country Dance to any novice dancers, patient pros and general dance enthusiasts. No partner is necessary to attend, but participants should wear comfortable clothes such as dresses, kilts, shorts or yoga pants. 

Admission: Free, but a donation of $0-$5 per person is encouraged
