Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, July 17

Disco Night Live From Quarantine at 9 p.m., hosted by DJ Barticus and WOUB Public Media. Though places have started to open up, DJ Barticus feels mass gatherings aren’t the greatest idea for people’s health. Join the livestream through Twitch.tv or through Instagram @bartykutz.

Saturday, July 18

Yoga in the Park at 9:30 a.m., hosted by Athens Yoga. Join various instructors for a socially distant outdoor yoga class. Links to pay the instructors are on the Facebook event page.

Reverse Tie-Dye with Bleach! at 1 p.m., hosted by The Dairy Barn Arts Center. Join the Dairy Barn for a socially distanced activity to create cool patterns on black fabrics. Groups up to six members that arrive together can share space and materials. The event can hold up to 10 groups. Bring a garment to dye, and make sure to wear masks.

Monday, July 20

5 Years, 5 Beers pairing menu at 8 p.m., hosted by Little Fish Brewing Company and Pork and Pickles. Join them at Little Fish for a five-course, five-beer pairing menu, designed with safety in mind by selling tables of up to four people. You’ll walk away with some commemorative glasses. Use the ticket link on the Facebook event page to register.

Tuesday, July 21

Basis of a Successful Start (BOSS) Class at 10 a.m., hosted by Small Business Development Center at Ohio University. Join this virtual training for individuals who want to start their own business but don’t know where to begin. You’ll learn about licensing, tax requirements, identifying your customer and marketing your product or service. Use the ticket link on the Facebook event page to register.

Mathews Insurance Summer Food Truck Series at 11 a.m., hosted by Mathews Insurance Inc. Join Mathews Insurance’s 75th anniversary celebration with July’s food truck choice of Kona Ice at the Mathews Insurance parking lot. Mathews Insurances asks that you still practice social distancing, and the lot will be marked accordingly.

Thursday, July 23

SpeakOUt at 5 p.m., hosted by the OU LGBT Center. Join them for one of several summer panels featuring stories and narratives from LGBTQ+ persons about their experiences and identities. Email lgbt@ohio.edu or DM the group on Facebook to be added to the Microsoft Teams event.
