The Ohio Bobcats (3-6 overall, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) hosted the Akron Zips (5-2-2, 3-0 MAC) Sunday afternoon, where the Zips defeated the Bobcats 1-0 in a defensive battle.
Both teams battled for possession early as neither side could find a clear advantage. Junior midfielder Iro Fakinou broke through in the opening minutes, sending a shot just wide of the net.
Akron found its rhythm midway through the first half. In the 16th minute, Addison Hall got behind the Bobcats' defense and sent a bottom-center shot toward freshman goalkeeper Ayla Rammel. Rammel read the play cleanly, making her first save of the afternoon to keep the game scoreless.
Ohio responded in the 26th minute as senior Jamaison Brooker gathered a pass near the box and sent a high shot toward the top of the frame. Akron goalkeeper Sara Bower dove and made the save to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
The physicality picked up as both teams turned to their benches for fresh legs. Following an Akron foul in the 33rd minute, senior Anna Burchett found space atop the penalty area and sent a shot over the crossbar.
Akron continued to pressure the Bobcats late in the half. In the 42nd minute, Holly Skipper created space down the flank before sending a low ball toward the bottom center of the goal. Rammel swallowed up the attempt for her second save of the half.
Neither team could break through before halftime as the Bobcats and Zips entered the locker room tied 0-0. Ohio had the advantage on shots and corner kicks in the first 45, while Akron committed more fouls. If Ohio could capitalize and exploit those numbers, it could look to jump out front coming out of the half.
The second half opened with both teams continuing to battle for control in the midfield. Ohio pushed forward, looking for an opening, while Akron kept pressure on the Bobcats' defense.
The Zips finally broke through when Jordanne Oberhaus capitalized on a pass from Hall, slipping the ball past the Bobcats' defense to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
Ohio immediately looked to respond, pushing more numbers into the attack as the clock wound down. The Bobcats searched for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Akron's backline held strong and denied Ohio any clean opportunities in front of the net.
Rammel finished the match with two saves as the Bobcats fell 1-0 despite outshooting the Zips 8-5. Akron committed 17 fouls compared to Ohio's six.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back Thursday when they return home to take on Eastern Michigan in MAC play.
