Recently an article ran in this paper concerning the AlcoholEdu program at Ohio University. As students at this school, we believe that the program is waste of our time and our money. The article itself mentioned that the program is not designed to prevent drinking, but to provide statistics on drinking to the school. Most of the students simply find ways around the program, and at a cost of over $10 per student, it is money that could be spent elsewhere. The way in which it is structured is inconvenient and time-consuming. The AlcoholEdu program takes almost four hours to complete, which discourages people from ever paying attention to the lessons. So our question to OU is, why continue a program that doesn't prevent underage drinking, inconveniences the students and costs over $40,000 a year? We believe that the course should become optional or vastly reduce the amount of time it takes to complete.
