Field Hockey: Bobcats fall to RedHawks 3-0

The Bobcats (3-2, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) fell for the second straight match by a score of 3-0. The RedHawks used a strangling defensive effort to keep the Bobcats off-balance the entire match.

A multi-goal effort from Paula Peña Martinez in the second quarter gave the RedHawks a boost. A late strike from Claudia Negrete Garcia in the fourth later cemented the RedHawks’ 13th consecutive victory over the Bobcats.

Here are numbers to know from the match:

5

Claudia Negrete Garcia continued to be a thorn in the Bobcats’ side. Negrete Garcia scored her fifth goal of the season — which is the amount of career goals she has against the Bobcats. Her last two goals against the Bobcats both come late in their respective matches. Her goal Friday afternoon was at the 57-minute mark while her previous goal was an overtime winner.

Additionally, Paula Peña Martinez continued her dominant season for Miami and scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season. The junior from Spain has become a weapon for Miami. She has emerged as a second offensive threat behind Negrete Garcia.

17

Ohio’s two losses this season have both been by a three-goal margin. Between its matches against Towson and Miami, Ohio gave up a staggering 17 shots on goal. In comparison, Ohio only put up nine shots on goal over that same span.

20

Miami goalkeeper Isabelle Perese notched her 20th career shutout on Friday afternoon. The senior standout has allowed less than one goal this season with 0.84 goals allowed on average. Her numbers place her in the upper echelon of goalkeepers in the country. Moreover, she recorded a shutout in back-to-back matches after she shut out Ohio and Ohio State.

Ohio has struggled when on the road. Its 0-2 road record coincides with its current losing streak. Luckily, Ohio will play the majority of its remaining matches in Athens — including an upcoming stretch where seven of 12 games are at Pruitt Field. Regardless, Ohio will need to find a way to be competitive on the road if it wants to do well in the postseason.
